Hello and welcome to another episode of Learning Treasures of the Internet, where we present you little gems we find while curating our TeachPitch library.
When I was a teacher, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was extremely topical. I was only a subject teacher, so not responsible for managing a class, but a number of my male students were diagnosed to have ADHD who previously had been known to be ‘mischievous’. I was a young teacher and neither really familiar with the diagnosis process nor did I really know what these student’s specific needs were nor how I could accommodate their needs into my teaching of the entire class.
Recently we have added a very useful source to the TeachPitch library – LD Online (Learning Difficulties Online).
It covers learning difficulties in general and ADHD in particular. It contains articles that summarise recent academic research, such as the article “Why Johnny can’t decode”. It explains the symptoms, causes and how you can help students with reading difficulties and ends with academic references in case you want to delve deeper into the subject.
Another article “Differentiating Instruction: A concerto with four movements” would have been very useful for me back in the day, as it explains how one can ensure everyone’s diverse needs are met in the classroom.
In respect to ADHD they also have many articles like the ones described above, but they also have very basic introduction material on how to identify the symptoms and tell the difference from ordinary “mischievous” behaviour. LD Online doesn’t only cater to the needs of teachers, but also parents. This article for example covers the the role of being a dad to children with ADHD.
